First off, Chris is seriously like some kind of superhero with how perfect he is. It's a bit unbelievable how strong, patient and understanding he is.This book is very much about love, intense love, but it doesn't focus on the romantic very much at all. It's about a friendship so strong that best friend doesn't seem to capture its significance. Where Chris and Blythe are like soulmates in the romantic sense, Sabin is like a platonic soulmate to Blythe if such a thing exists. It's a little confusing and hard to relate to for me since I haven't felt or seen the kind of platonic love described (one as powerful and deep as shown), but it's clear that Blythe and Sabin's relationship is incredibly unique and special. It was also nice to see more into the relationship between Sabin and Chris as brothers. Like I said, Chris is some kind of freaking hero with how perfectly he deals with everything. But it's nice to see.
If you're looking for more romance this will probably not satisfy you. This is a story of deep friendship and a more familial love, exploring a different perspective into the Shepherd family trauma. Also, as in the first book, fate and a sort of belief in the unbelievable does come into play once again, though not as strongly as in the first book.

Restless Waters A Left Drowning Novel Left Drowning Series Book 2 edition by Jessica Park Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews
The first thing I’m going to say about Restless Waters is that if you pick this one up, do yourself a favorite and GRAB THE AUDIO BOOK! The music is something that will enhance the book so much. It was beautiful, stunning, and made this an experience to listen. As a lot of you know, Left Drowning is one of my all time favorite reads. I’ve read it, re-read it, and Blythe, Chris, Sabin and the rest of the crew are ones that are in my heart. Reading another book about them made me equal parts excited and nervous. So I put it off. And I put it off some more. Then I finally read it. Although it wasn’t that epic read that Left Drowning was for me, it was still a book that made me feel and made my heart ache for my characters I love so much. Reading about Sabin’s struggles devastated me.
Blythe and Sabin have been best friends since he stole her coffee. They have a different kind of friendship and relationship. They always have. Sabin has a past that still haunts him and issues going on right now that are messing with his head. Trying to get away from this, he moves cross country to California. Most of the book takes place there. Of course Blythe and Chris go to visit him and Blythe helps him work through his issues. But here is where the problem lies- she is one of his issues. And dealing with his issues are just making her have issues. It’s a tangled web. And all I have to say is THANK GOD FOR CHRIS! Because he is who they really both need.
I know a lot of people were bothered by the dynamics of Blythe and Sabin’s relationship, and I get it, I really do. Fortunately, this did not bother me so much. Overall, I understand their friendship and relationship. I get them. They are damaged people and sometimes they need each other to lean on. We all need a friend like that. There were moments that made me cry, that deep down devastated me, but by the end, I was happy with how things were. Things were right again and I had a big smile on my face. Once again, I’m going to say if you read this, READ THE AUDIO! I can’t stress this enough. It’s amazing!
“Sometimes, I feel like… f***, I don’t know.”
But I do know. I have been there.
“Like you were left drowning.”
“Yes.”
“So, do it. Breathe. Just breathe.”
“There’s no air, Blythe.”
“Reach for me. I won’t let you drown. I’m right here.”
He rubs my back some more and then laughs lightly. “You’re already taken.”
“I have two hands, Sabin. Grab one.”
GAH!! The feels!! This book is full of them and I totally loved it! I fell so in love with the Shepherd/McGuire clan in Left Drowning and wished that we could have more of them, so imagine my delight with Jessica Park dropped this little surprise on us! I was beyond excited to see that we would get not only more Blythe and Chris but also lots more Sabin. He was my favorite character in Left Drowning and I just knew that there was so much more to him that I was dying to find out about. Well this book delivered all of that and more and I was so glad for the chance to reconnect with this amazing, dynamic, quirky bunch of characters!
When I read the blurb for this book I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect, I started referring to it as ‘Sabin’s book’ and in a way it definitely was but not in the traditional sense. If there’s one thing I’ve learned about Jessica Park’s books it’s to not expect traditional, she is brilliant at taking a traditional idea and turning it on its head and I love that she continually surprises me with where she takes her stories. To my surprise, this book was again narrated by Blythe. It never really crossed my mind that we would again get Blythe’s POV in this book. I thought maybe it would be alternating POVs, or Sabin’s POV or maybe a new heroine’s POV but after reading the book I can definitely see why she stuck with Blythe. It really delivered consistency in terms of capturing the same feel as Left Drowning.
‘There is life after hell. There is breathing and life and profound love after hell.’
In Left Drowning we learn about the horrific childhood that the Shepherd children had and we see how the trauma catches up to them years later. It was heartbreaking but also inspiring to see how they banded together to pull through, when we meet up with them again in Restless Waters we get to see how everyone is doing and it was great to see how well Eric and Estelle were getting on as well as how strong Chris and Blythe’s relationship is. What’s troubling though is that we get hints of a storm brewing with our beloved Sabin. He generally has a larger than life personality but underneath his humor and playfulness lies a very damaged and fragile individual. As the story unfolded my heart hurt for Sabin as I watched him teeter on the edge and I braced for the inevitable blow up. And god, when it comes, it’s brutal and raw and it definitely hurt. Especially if you love Sabin as much as I did. But what I’ve also come to expect from Jessica Park is a beautiful ending that’ll take you back from the pain and fill your heart with love and happiness for these characters and that’s just what we got!
My favorite part of the book was how it explored the dynamic between Chris, Blythe and Sabin. There’s no question that Chris and Blythe have an epic love, the kind that is just meant to be and can endure anything. But there’s also no denying the connection that Blythe and Sabin share. It was apparent from the moment he first stole her coffee at the beginning of Left Drowning and the bond has only gotten stronger as time goes on. Of course when there’s feelings that strong between friends things are bound to get confusing and messy. It was fascinating to see how they all dealt with it. Chris just proved time and time again how incredible he really is, and man that family is so lucky to have him. If you didn’t love him before, you’re sure to fall for him here! There are some really heartbreaking scenes between Sabin and Blythe as this all plays out, but it was amazing to see how Chris was able to ground them and guide them through. Their connection (all 3 of them) perfectly showed that love comes in many forms and it’s not always clear cut or traditionally defined. And, I loved how Jessica Park brought everything full circle with these three. Absolutely brilliant!
I love these characters so much and I loved this book as well! I will 100% read anything that Ms. Park writes but I would be thrilled if we were given the chance to read even more about this group. I think there is still so much story to tell and I hope we get to experience it someday! But if not, thank you for at least affording us the opportunity to reconnect with these beloved characters!
“It’s a beautiful life. Despite everything, all the s*** we’ve been through, it’s a beautiful life we have.”
