THE BIRTHDAY MYSTERY an absolutely gripping whodunit from a millionselling author edition by FAITH MARTIN Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Oh dear! I have discovered that I am not a reader of cosy mysteries! I really tried but found it rather drawn out and did a bit of speed reading so that I could actually finish the book. The reader is told many times over in the first few chapters that the main character is a large girl. This information is repeated in different ways throughout the book, as if it really is an important piece of information. I found this as insensitive as a continual reminder that someone was disabled, or blind for example. The ' large' girl is a cook described throughout the story as a 'fancy cook'. The food she cooks is 'fancy food' and the birthday cake is a 'fancy cake'. ...and so on. The author appears to be very successful so I will not be too unkind, and give this book 3 stars.

THE BIRTHDAY MYSTERY an absolutely gripping whodunit from a millionselling author edition by FAITH MARTIN Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

This book is like "Murder on the Orient Express". Lots of suspects to choose from, and when you've figured out the who,you change your mind.

I'm a Faith Martin fan. I'm also happy to say that the only commonality to Hillary Green is there is murder.

It's a great story with a lot of interesting characters.

Bonnappettit.
Well written mystery with lots of clues about the mystery. Jenny a well known cook was hired to cater a birthday dinner. Almost on arrival the mystery starts, with a young boy is found dead in the water. From there until the murder the suspense grows with many suspects. The clues are good and I figured out who it was. Highly recommend this clean mystery for your reading.
This is a basic British mystery featuring cook Jenny Starling as the detective. Jenny is a traveling cook who is catering a birthday party at a large country estate when a murder happens at the party. There are the usual suspects and she works with the police to discover the killer and motive. It was originally published as written by Joyce Cato and, I believe, had a different title but has been reissued in kindle edition with Faith Martin and Birthday Mystery. It's supposed to be the first in the series, however Starling's past history as a detective is referenced. It's difficult to tell when this was written and when it's set. It feels like they tried to modernize it when it was issued on kindle, but there are no references to cell phones, internet and social media and it feels more like the 70's or 80's, although, at times because of the country house setting, it could have been the 50's. It's a fine mystery, although I prefer her other series (the Fatal ones). I won't bother with another Jenny Starling but will stick with that series.
Fun Drinking Game Take a drink (of tea of course!) every time the author describes Starling as 'Junoesque'.
I enjoyed this story and had a hard time putting it down, anxious to see how it all came together. Many well developed characters kept the pool of possible suspects open. I liked the way we found out that Jenny had solved it, but it was several more chapters before we find out who, precisely how, and why. Jenny hasn't quite endeared me as much as DI Hillary Greene, but there is a lot of potential as Ms Martin develops more storylines. I appreciate the introduction of food and cooking as additional "characters", along with her already keen use of birds and plant life throughout her plots. I was a little puzzled by the opening note that this story was adapted from a book by a different author. Hopefully that heritage won't encumber Ms Martin as she entertains us with more of Jenny Starling's adventures.
As a big fan of the Hillary Greene mysteries, I was prepared to like this one by Faith Martin as well. I think I must like police procedural mysteries more than a single person acting as sleuth because I never really got into this one. We are told that the cook/caterer who is the main character is a large woman, but that was repeated needlessly throughout the entire book. She was called "the Junoesque cook" more than I wanted to hear, and I found it irritating. I don't think I will be following Miss Starling any more.
This was a well written mystery but about as different from Martin's Hillary Greene police procedural series as you can get. This was Agatha Christie crossed with Trisha Ashley...a cozy whodunnit set at an upper middle class birthday bash where the private chef solves the mystery under the noses of the police.

A fun romp if not particularly believable.
The main character shows up at all the perfect times to hear clues. She is not seen and the author uses unbelievable ways to make this happen, like having her suffer a cramp and then be unseen under a table. She heard way too many conversations while being just out of site. Even so, the reader is NOT given clues that a good mystery writer would share in order to be fair. I bought the second book when I got this one or I would not have wasted the money...Even $0.99.
