I found myself rooting for this couple even when they were unable to root for themselves. Evie and Griffin are the consummate “opposites attract” couple, whether you look at them now or when they were teens. They may be opposites on the outside, but their hearts are a perfect pair. This is one of the sweetest romance books I’ve read in a long, long time.Tags : Toying with His Affections: A Goody's Goodies Novel [Laura K. Toying with His Affections A Goody Goodies Novel Laura K Curtis 9781941097045 Books Reviews
Evie is an ex Las Vegas dancer who's come back to her small town in Tennessee for a family emergency. She left there many years ago, oppressed by all the judgmental attention from the town folk. Griffin was the town sherif's son and resident bad boy. Now he himself has come back from a stint in the army to take over from his ailing father. Can an ex-bad boy and a fallen good girl make a go of it? You bet they can!
This is a small town romance, yes, but with a lot more depth than is usually found in this trope. Both Griffin and Evie carry scars, physical and mental, from their past. The supporting characters were complex and well drawn. I particularly enjoyed Benny Silver, the sex-toy king! The relationship develops steadily, with heat and emotion, making the HEA very satisfying and believable. I was left wanting to revisit these people.
The best part for me was that Evie came back home to help her family, not because she'd failed and had no other option.
I would recommend this novel to people who enjoy Shannon Stacey and Robyn Carr.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The word in Fairview, Tennessee is that Evangeline (Evie) Bell is a showgirl in Vegas, so wrapped up in her career that she couldn’t be bothered to attend her Uncle Harry’s funeral—even though Harry and Patricia had taken her in and raised her after the death of her single mother. But Evie’s no more a showgirl than her former wildchild cousin Candace, who is now an attorney with a husband and two kids but what she really does for a living is not a secret she cares to share with everyone in her old hometown.
Sheriff Griffin Barstow took over his father’s job when his old man had a heart attack, and when Evie runs into him, she can’t quite believe the transformation that’s taken place in him. If she was the typical small town “goody two shoes,” he was the local rebel, the kind of guy who would never notice a bookworm like Evie. Or so she always thought.
A lot of things can change in ten years.
In Toying with His Affections, Curtis turns the tried and true formula of “bad boy/good girl” on its head and the result is very entertaining. There are good reasons for Evie and Griff to keep their distance from each other—he’s got an election coming up, she’s got a life (and a pile of medical debt) back in Vegas and meanwhile, her Aunt Patricia’s bookstore/café is going under. Griff and Evie have their priorities and getting naked together is not high on that list—though it’s never far from their minds.
There’s enough sexual chemistry here to ignite a much bigger town than Fairview, and Curtis is an expert at spinning her situations out and piling on the complications in a real way that won’t leave her readers impatient because she’s “stalling.”
Before the book is over, the writer has set up half a dozen subplots that she can spin out into future “Goody Goodies” novels, and one of the most engaging is a very intriguing hookup possibility involving Evie’s Vegas boss, sex toy mogul Benny Silver. (Benny is a mensch, a guy who treats Evie like a daughter and taught her everything she knows about business.)
Benny isn’t the only engaging supporting character we meet in the novel, and some of the book’s best scenes involve Evie interacting with bookstore customers and Griff’s coworkers, and the man who owns the hardware store down the street. Readers will find themselves caught up in the life of Curtis’ small-town Tennessee setting, wondering if Samantha is going to like that James Rollins book or if there’s going to be any more trouble from the town’s self-righteous prudes.
In other words, this book has the whole package—an actual plot that surrounds the love story instead of just leaving the boy-meets-girl storyline to carry the book; characters who seem real and dimensional and capable of change; and sensual scenes that deliver heat without getting all clinical about it. And all of this is delivered with a sense of humor and attention to detail. At one point Evie remembers some lovely roses Patricia planted for her, a striking flower called a “Tracey Wickham rose.” A generic rose would have done, really, but Curtis is painting a landscape here, not taking a Polaroid snapshot.
You’ll enjoy this book.
This is an entertaining and exceptionally good read! Evie returns to her small hometown in Tennessee to help her aunt recover from an accident. She left home as the "good little girl" and is returning to town as a former Las Vegas showgirl. Though she doesn't dance anymore, she does still work in Vegas at one of the most successful shop for sex toys in the country. Maybe the neighbors won't be as nice to the pretty girl next door this time.
Add a few family tensions to the mix, and you've got a bubbling cauldron of resentment, jealousy, and anger. It usually makes a good stew, and Laura stirs it well.
The romantic element enters the room with bad boy turned lawman Griff, who is now the local sheriff. There's an immediate attraction, but what will it do for the sheriff's campaign if he's seen in the company of a former Las Vegas showgirl?
Laura has taken all these contradictions and used them to create a lively story. I believe the term used these days is "smexy." A story about a smart, sexy woman who makes her own way in the world and learns it's not always necessary to "depend on the kindness of strangers" to get things done!
This is a great read for the beach, for your favorite nook at home, or just because you like to read romance. Grab a copy today!
