'Awakening' was a very fast-paced, quick read. In 87 pages, this first in a series of short serials takes the reader from a brief encounter between two strangers, all the way to marriage. The story progressed at a whirlwind pace and left me wondering what was motivating David's actions. A first date and a one-night stand would have been a lot of ground to cover in so few pages. A first date all the way up to a marriage, makes me wonder what the hell David and Sophie are smoking! Sophie doesn't even know what this guy does for a living! The incredibly rapid progression of events also meant that very little time was spent on character development. As a result, I don't have any strong feelings for either Sophie or David. At most, I feel a little sad for Sophie. She was really dealt a bad hand in life. She's all alone in the world and is incredibly naive. No doubt, this is due to her sheltered upbringing by a frigid and cruel aunt.
David is a total mystery. He's rich, handsome, and could be a serial killer for all we're told. Being that he isn't naive like sweet little Sophie is, I'm left questioning what his motives and intentions are.
Some more time on character development would have greatly benefitted this story and possibly taken it from "okay" to "good". However, Ms. Grey has made me curious to see where this is heading, so I will continue on with the second in this series. Hopefully, much more will come to light and I'll get a better feel for who David and Sophie really are. Right now, they still feel like strangers and curiosity is the only thing keeping me reading.

Awakening A Dangerous Man #1 edition by Serena Grey Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews
Whew...This book is a schmexy hot mess but it's over faster than a 18 yr. old boy on prom night.
Sophie is so loveable and needs to feel what it is like to be important to someone. Not believing she is pretty or wanted in any way she wants better for herself it just seems she lacks direction. David is...what is David? Sexy as hell that's for sure, rich, alpha but what else?
The author's style is fun, fluid and easy to read.
The story was just enough to wet your well.. let's say palate, then leaves you panting with a WTF look on you're face when its over.
This WILL be a hot series I just wish they were longer.
I only read this book because of all the one-star reviews it received, and I honestly don't understand why. I thought this short story, which is really the first few chapters of a book, was well written, entertaining, and almost sweet, even though there is one fairly hot sex scene. The plot kind of reminded me of the books I read in the 80's, older, wealthy man marries young, shy, insecure virgin. He has a beautiful assistant working for him, there's talk he married said virgin for a reason. She of course falls in love with him immediately...although 9 years doesn't make him that much older. Remember those Harlequins? LOL
I enjoyed this story, and look forward to reading the next installment.
Tory
Take one 18 year old virgin, mix with rich powerful man. What do you get? Instant chemistry and something that feels wrong.
Personally, I like my H/h to be equals in a relationship. Unfortunately, I didn't get that here. I got a girl who has had her self esteem stomped on. A girl who mistakes lust for love.
But the worst part of this "book" is that it ends in a cliffhanger. While the author may call this book 1 of a series, it is actually the opening chapters of a serialized novel. It doesn't work as a short story.
During the sex scenes I felt icky, all I could think about was this is supposed to be a successful man in his mid twenties. He knows that the girl has no experience and nothing to compare his intense reaction to her, to me it shouted predator, predator.
The following came to mind
“Will you walk into my parlour?” said the Spider to the Fly,
'Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy;
The way into my parlour is up a winding stair,
And I've a many curious things to shew when you are there.”
“Oh no, no,” said the little Fly, “to ask me is in vain,
For who goes up your winding stair
-can ne'er come down again.”
All I could wonder over and over, was how was she going to come out of this.
I don't recommend this story.
This was a short quick read that I felt was too short. Sophie Bennett has virtually no experience with men. Orphaned from birth, she’s gone from living with her reclusive spinster aunt, to a sheltered education in boarding school and then she meets David Preston. This book had a few problems for me first of all it was too short and second it was too fast pace. The characters young, plain, poor, virgin sales clerk meets gorgeous, insanely rich, over confident 27 year-old man. Man, instantly becomes obsessed with girl & hot sex scenes Sophie had no experience and she confused lust with love. I have read this author before and I liked the last book that I read by her and I know this is the first book in a new series and I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
